Discovery

A movie film was raised from the wreck of the 'Merchant' off Lowestoft in the summer of 2004. It's a 35mm cellulose movie in a fairly bad state of deterioration.

Initial Recording

Film has been soaking in fresh water since recovery

Progess

Summer 2004 - declared to Receiver of Wreck.

The 4615 ton 'Merchant' was sailing under the flag of the Charente Steamship Co., Ltd. (Harrison Line) of Liverpool and London. She was built in 1935 and was the third vessel to bear that name for her owners. She was mined and sunk off Great Yarmouth in 1941.

Autumn 2004 - Have cleaned and dried half of the footage. This has been sorted and chopped up to retrieve any usable frames. Footage appears to be an army information film or possibly a home movie shot by one of the crew or passengers.
